How Much Does It Cost to Start a Hotshot Business?

Updated By HotshotDispatchers Dispatch Desk4 min read

Quick answerShort version

Starting a hotshot business costs the truck and trailer (bought or financed), an insurance down payment, small official fees ($300 for MC authority, $46 UCR for 2026, a free EIN), an ELD, securement gear and working capital for the weeks before brokers pay. Equipment and insurance are the big numbers; registration is the small one.

How much it costs to start a hotshot business comes down to three big numbers (truck, trailer, insurance) and a handful of small ones. This page itemizes all of them, separates one-time costs from monthly ones, and uses official sources for every fee. Equipment and insurance prices vary too much to quote honestly, so those are shown as EXAMPLE numbers to replace with your own.

One-time costs: registration and setup

Registration costs are small next to equipment. Paying a service to register for you adds its fee on top; applying directly in FMCSA's Motus system costs only the official fees.

Truck and trailer

This is where most of the money goes, and where the choice between buying, financing and using a truck you already own matters most.

Equipment, financedEXAMPLE
Used one-ton dually, down payment$8,000
32 ft gooseneck flatbed, down payment$3,000
Gooseneck hitch, installed$1,200
Pre-purchase inspections$300
Equipment cash to start$12,500

EXAMPLE numbers. Real prices depend on year, mileage, condition, region and your credit. Buy to the ratings your plan needs: a non-CDL plan needs a trailer plated low enough to keep the combination at 26,000 lb or under.

Insurance

Insurance is usually paid as a down payment at binding, then monthly. On a new authority it's often the second-largest startup check after equipment. What drives it, and how to lower it, is in hotshot insurance cost. Get real quotes before you buy equipment; a quote can change which truck and trailer make sense.

Gear, ELD and software

  • Securement gear: chains, binders, straps, edge protection, and tarps if you'll haul freight that needs them.
  • ELD: hardware plus a monthly plan, unless an exception applies.
  • Phone and data: your office on wheels.
  • Load board: optional if you use a dispatcher. DAT's carrier plans start at $59 a month on DAT's pricing page as of October 21, 2026 (DAT).
  • Safety gear: reflective triangles, fire extinguisher, gloves, vest.

Monthly costs once you're running

Fixed: truck and trailer payments, insurance, ELD and phone, accounting, and a monthly share of annual fees.

Variable: fuel (check current diesel prices on the EIA's weekly update), maintenance and tires, tolls and scales, and any percentage-based fees like dispatch at 7% of gross on loads you haul.

To see those costs as a monthly P&L, use the EXAMPLE months in how much hotshot drivers make. To turn them into the minimum rate you can accept, see hot shot rates.

Working capital: the cost people forget

Brokers usually pay on terms measured in weeks, not days, so your first loads are paid for out of your own pocket: fuel, tolls, the first insurance payments. Working capital is the cash that carries you until money comes in, plus a cushion for a slow week or a repair.

A simple rule: hold at least one to two months of fixed costs plus fuel for your first several loads. If you use quick pay or factoring, you'll need less cash but pay a fee for faster money. Freight sources that help a new carrier get going are on our hotshot loads page.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to start hotshot trucking?

The official fees are small: $300 for operating authority, $46 for UCR in 2026 ($55 for 2027), and the EIN is free. The large costs are the truck, the trailer and the insurance down payment, plus working capital. Add yours up in the startup cost calculator.

Can I start hotshot with a pickup I already own?

If its ratings fit the work, yes, and it cuts the biggest cost. Check the door-jamb GVWR and any GCWR, whether it's a dually, and its condition; a truck that's fine for personal towing may wear quickly at commercial miles. You'll still need commercial insurance and a trailer whose ratings match your CDL or non-CDL plan.

How much working capital does a hotshot need?

Enough to cover fixed costs and fuel until brokers pay. Many brokers pay on terms measured in weeks, so plan for at least one to two months of fixed costs plus fuel for your first loads, more if you're not using quick pay or factoring.

What are the monthly costs of a hotshot truck?

Truck and trailer payments, insurance, ELD and phone, accounting, and a monthly share of annual fees, plus fuel, maintenance, tires and tolls that rise with miles. The EXAMPLE P&Ls in our income guide show a full month line by line.
